Tomato Basil Grilled Cheese (Printable)

Classic comfort sandwich with fresh basil, ripe tomato, and creamy mozzarella toasted to golden perfection.

# Components:

→ Bread & Dairy

01 - 4 slices rustic or sourdough bread
02 - 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
03 - 4 ounces fresh mozzarella, sliced

→ Vegetables & Herbs

04 - 1 large ripe tomato, sliced
05 - 8 to 10 fresh basil leaves
06 - Salt and black pepper to taste

# Directions:

01 - Lay out bread slices and evenly spread softened butter on one side of each slice.
02 - Place two buttered bread slices on a clean surface with buttered side down. Layer mozzarella slices evenly over bread, followed by tomato slices and basil leaves. Sprinkle with salt and black pepper.
03 - Top with remaining bread slices, buttered side up, creating a sealed sandwich.
04 - Heat a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat for approximately 1 minute.
05 - Place sandwiches in the skillet and cook for 3 to 4 minutes per side, or until bread is golden brown and cheese is fully melted. Press gently with a spatula for an even, crisp exterior.
06 - Remove from pan and cool for 1 minute. Slice diagonally and serve immediately.

# Expert Advice:

01 -
  • It takes ten minutes but tastes like you put real thought into it.
  • The combination of warm mozzarella, fresh basil, and ripe tomato feels indulgent without being heavy.
  • You probably already have everything you need in your kitchen right now.
02 -
  • If your tomato is really juicy, pat the slices dry with a paper towel or the bread can get soggy in the middle.
  • Medium heat is key, too high and the bread burns before the cheese melts, too low and it just steams instead of crisping.
03 -
  • Spread the butter all the way to the edges of the bread so every bite has that crispy, golden texture.
  • If you want extra flavor, rub a cut garlic clove lightly on the inside of the bread before adding the cheese.
